Mammogram

Detect a tumor up to 2 years before it can be felt.

Get a mammogram.Mammograms can help detect 85-90% of breast cancers and can identify a tumor up to two years before a lump can be felt. According to the FDA, “Mammography is the best method for detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages, when the disease is most successfully treated and there are more treatment options.”

A mammogram is a very low dose x-ray of the interior of your breasts that is used to detect signs of breast cancer. Your breasts change from year to year, so it’s important to start a visual history from age 40 on. When a doctor has more than one picture to compare, “bad seeds” can be found sooner.

A mammogram feels much like getting your blood pressure taken. The breast is flattened for 3-4 seconds, typically for two angles on each side. If you schedule your mammogram a few days after your period ends when your breasts are less tender, it won’t hurt as much.

If your tissue is too dense for a mammogram, and you suspect something, an ultrasound may be a good alternative. Don’t wait it out. When breast cancer is found early, cure rates exceed 90%!
