Genes and Family History
In the U.S., 90-95% of people diagnosed with breast cancer are the first in their family.
Breast cancer may also be caused by inherited gene mutations. Hereditary breast cancers account for approximately just 5% to 10% of all breast cancers. These gene mutations are called BRCA1 and BRCA2.
Having a gene mutation doesn’t mean that you will get breast cancer, but it does mean that you are 3 to 7 times more likely. Although your chances are higher that you will pass the gene mutation to descendants, not every child will get the gene.
